Ancient history by an ancient scholar

I gave this book the highest rating not because it is completely accurate - subsequent studies of the Germanic tribes have revealed some differing information - but because it offers a look at the Germanic tribes written by an author who lived at a time when those tribes were active. It is striking how fair Tacitus is in his descriptions of these groups of people. After all, they were a threat to the empire of which he was a citizen. Would that all modern historians ascribed to the same standard when describing more recent history rather than "interpreting" according to their own particular biases.
If I have any disappointment in the book, it is because it is too short. I could have easily spent many more pleasurable hours of furthur reading.

Germania by Cornelius Tacitus

Translated by Thomas Gordon. Often the wording used in translating the original text is clearly not modern English. Therefore understanding what is written here is often difficult. I don't have a dictionary of Old English or Middle English or whatever this is so I'm at a loss. Better job could have been done in translating. A problem not of the translator's is the names of these Germanic
tribes. I can find no map from this era that identifies these tribal states. If there exists such information ; it would be helpful to have an Appendix with such maps and definitions of the tribes. Otherwise this is valuable as an observation of Germanic peoples, their dress, something of their culture, their values at this point in time. Apparently none other exists. I would like to see someone extract more comprehensible history out of this in put it into modern English. I could certainly be wrong in my judgement here but as a direct translation of historic Greek this is "raw."

an important look into our past

Every Germanic needs to read this. It's an insight into the early days of our heritage, and as long as this text exists, nobody can erase it. Anti-Germanic professors love to call this a dangerous text that needs to be kept away from people. Read it yourself, learn who you are, value your people and your heritage. From England to Sweden, the US, Canada, Australia, if you heritage is Germanic, you need to read this text.
