About the Author
Robert Cudeck,Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at Ohio State University. A recipient of the Cattell Award for Distinguished Multivariate Research, Dr. Cudeck also served as President of the Psychometric Society in 2003. He received his Ph.D. in Quantitative Psychology from the University of Southern California.

For serious analysts: What's past is prologue

When first exposed to well-developed multivariate methods like factor analysis, students are inclined to take whatever they are given as if it was handed down by the statistical gods. The truth, however, is that real people make tentative advances, and other people put forward contrasting views. An important first step in maturing as a user of these methods is to grasp this notion that our methods are human creations with strengths, limitations, controversies and networks of influence.
I like this volume partly because it offers perspective on the evolution of factor analysis. The volume also makes room for distinct perspectives, as when MacCallum, Browne and Cai write about "Factor Analysis Models as Approximations." The collection includes several didactic chapters that I have never seen duplicated elsewhere--if you don't have this volume, you will never see those works.
I won't say that it is a perfect collection. There are some chapters that are nothing more than a frustrating recap of dogma. But one person's dogma is probably another person's penetrating insight. Contributors to the volume include many names that have earned the benefit of the doubt, and most of them deliver something useful and interesting here.
This volume earns its place on your factor analysis bookshelf.
