Not one of greatest

I am an avid reader of British history and the kings and queens of that country. However, this was not one of the best books I have read on the subject. It tends to jump around too much, and not keep them in any sequence. To be honest, I didn't finish the book.

The Bill Bryson version of English history

This book seems to be attracting criticism for various inaccuracies and flawed analysis, but I think some of the critics are missing the point. Brenda Ralph Lewis was apparently a royal correspondent, not a historian, and this is not a scholarly academic text aimed at a professional audience. Instead, it seems to me like the equivalent of a Bill Bryson book on linguistics; a book designed to be informative but also entertaining, written by and for the interested layperson. Like Bryson, Lewis' primary aim is to tell an exciting and entertaining story rather than have every word being strict literal truth. Provided you can accept that, 'Dark History...' is a good read.
Lewis charts every English monarch from the Norman Conquest to the present day. Each chapter begins with a family tree showing the line of succession, as well as the various rivals, usurpers, and failed successors. This makes even the most complicated manourverings and manipulations easy to follow, as well as showing us at a glance the often unfortunate fates that many of these people met.
Being titled 'Dark History...', the focus is clearly on Royals Behaving Badly. We're treated to stories of family rivalries, harems of mistresses, boy lovers, stolen crowns, abdication, sectarianism, executions, murder, Regicide, rebellions, and civil war. While infamous names like Henry VIII are given plenty of space, it's fascinating to read about the failures and frailties of lesser-known monarchs. If nothing else, Lewis' book provides an entertaining insight into those Kings and Queens that most of us only know as names on a list from a long-forgotten history class.
One recurring theme throughout the entire book is the conflict between the Monarchy and what Lewis describes as the "barons" (the gentry, landowners, and wealthy commoners that would eventually morph into the Parliament). Right from the very start, the battle lines between King and Parliament are drawn, and the tug-of-war plays out over the centuries. We have arrogant "Divine Right" Kings who simply dismiss Parliament on a whim and rule alone, as well as lily-livered weaklings who are happy to let the barons push them around. The influence of outsiders (good and bad) on the monarchy is also explored, and is another source of tension for the baron class.
There are two criticisms of this book I do have, however:
Firstly, as others have commented, by focussing only on the "Bad" behaviour, Lewis almost completely ignores those monarchs who were competent, popular, and relatively well-behaved. Whole decades are dismissed in brief "King X brought stability and prosperity to England for the next 30 years, but then his son and grandson stuffed it all up again" type sentences. Queen Victoria is dispensed with in a few paragraphs, with much more focus given to the womanising of the future Edward VII. I understand the point of the book is to share Dark Secrets, but it would have been nice to have some focus on "Good" monarchs, to provide a contrast.
Secondly, the latter parts of the book, focussing on the Windsors, are more the stuff of gutter tabloid fodder than genuine "scandals". They are interesting in their own right, I guess...but in the context of executed wives and bloodthirsty tyrants, things like Prince Harry having a few too many beers and acting stupid is very small potatoes indeed. Arguably, these chapters show the modern monarchy is fairly decent; they aren't perfect, but they know their place, and such "scandals" as they are involved in are pretty tame.
Still, the book is interesting and above all entertaining, provided you accept it for what it is. If you're after an academic textbook, this is not for you...you will just become frustrated picking holes in the historical record. But those who are looking for a Bryson-esque insight into royal shenanigans over the past millenium should find this a worthwhile read.

too many mistakes

i deleted this book after the first few chapters. too many histakes, clearly this was written with sensatiolism in mind rather than facts, and while i think i little sensationalism in history is fun -not at the expense of true historical facts.
