Arno Kopecky is a journalist and travel writer whose dispatches have appeared in The Walrus, Foreign Policy, the Globe and Mail, Maclean's, the Tyee, Kenya's Daily Nation and other publications. His work focuses on human rights, the environment, and globalization. Kopecky has covered civil uprisings in Mexico, cyclones in Burma, Iceland's attempt to become the first oil-free nation on earth, Zimbabwe's thirty-year dictatorship, and election violence in Kenya. He lives in Squamish, BC.

A swim in the -not yet spoiled- Vancouver sea

I leave in Majorca/Spain/Europe. I love sailing. I love outdoor sports. I'm quite interested in environmental issues but it's not my main subject. But in Spain we have also trouble with the lobbying power of big corporations, as oil companies (the oil spill told by the author in the book, and more recently, with submarine expolations made with a sort of fracking technique that disturb greatly the sea population of the Mediterranean) and the acquiescent attitude of the politicians.
So, I happened to buy the book by curiosity. The beginning is superb, it even reminded me of some of Bill Bryson's books. The mix of sailing inexperience and slowly diving into the Northern Gateway smelly subject, the people they encounter... That fully grabbed me. The second half, for someone who's not from Canada is not as.... Well, it's very good as a journalistic essay, but the magic of the first chapters is lost.
Anyway, overall I enjoyed the book and congratulate the author for the idea and the commitment. Might he write a fiction spin-off, sort of' A walk in the woods'??!!

Great and captivating reportage

The Oil Man and the Sea is a great piece of reportage and of excellent writing. Author Arno Kopecky travels by sailboat the proposed course of where the megatankers carrying the "dirtiest oil in the world,"-- Alberta tar sands product-- are slated to travel on the way to China, through some of the most treacherous and stunningly beautiful coastlines and fjords in the world. He describes the scenery, wildlife, communities and people of the coastal and inlet waters of the coast of British Columbia, the location of one of the rarest pieces of preserved, awe-inspiring and pristine nature left in the world, the Great Bear Rainforest, also home of the rare white "Spirit Bear." It's a great story, and an impassioned call for common sense on the part of the Harper government and the massive oil industry to reconsider placing at risk one of the last great places of the world. Set against the background of First Nation (Native North American) peoples and cultures, this book provides vivid insights into a part of the world, a way of life, and the recklessness of national oil policies that place at huge risk this rare part of the world. Worth reading about, getting angry about, and acting about!
