At Kings Mountain, in northwest South Carolina, this small volunteer contingent of frontiersmen met the British in early October. The American victory there forced the British to retreat and turned the tide in the American Revolution's southern campaign.

Decent Work on King's Mountain

I purchased this book by J. David Dameron because of my interest in the Revolutionary War. I have several ancestors who served in patriot militia units during our Revolution, one of whom served at King's Mountain.
King's Mountain is somewhat unique among the battles of the Revolution, in that it was fought entirely by patriot militia units against loyalist militia units. Major Patrick fergusson, who commanded loyalist forces, was the only British soldier present at the engagement. The patriot forces were commanded by William Campbell, although other officers of distinction were there as patriot militia leaders, including Isaac Shelby and John Sevier.
This book is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and some appendix type information. In the introduction, Dameron states that he had ancestors who served in patriot units, and tells about his childhood visits to the King's mountain battle site.
Chapter 1 tells the story of the lea dup tot he battle of King's Mountain, including the partisan activities of both sides. In short, the British army under Cornwallis, based in South Carolina, was attempting to take over North Carolina in a drive north to Virginia. Stunningly there were many loyalist who actually volunteered as militiamen for the crown, and joined with Cornwallis. The British thrust had to be stopped, so the Overmeountain Men gathered at Sycamore Shoals and proceeded to hunt Fergusson!
Chapter 2 details the battle, which was a well staged assault on the loyalist cam on the heights of King's Mountain by coordinated patriot ilitia units. the Overmountain men fought mainly with long rifles, whereas the loyalist militia had been outfitted with brown Bess muskets; many loyalists also had bayonets. The patriots fought their way up the mountain, sometimes in small groups (fire teams in modern terms). The loyalist countered with the bayonet, but eventually the loyalists fell back to the main camp area. Fergusson as killed, and it is alleged that patriots may have urinated on his dead body. Considering the atrocities carried out by the British army and loyalist militias, this would have been an understandable insult against their fallen foe. The loyalist force took the majority of the casualties. The total casualties for both sides was at least 275 killed and 221 wounded at this engagement, with 244 of the killed being loyalists! The patriot warriors DESTROYED their traitorous loyalist countrymen that day. One loyalist who survived the battle that day described the patriot militiamen as "tall, raw boned, sinewy, with long matted hair" (p67). On civilian, a woman who tended camp for Fergusson and was probably also his mistress, was killed in the exchange, probably accidentally.
Dameron gives some brief information of the subsequent lives of some of the key participants of this battle. Dameron also talks about the history of the battlefield monuments and the park that is there today. In 1855 there was a monument erected on the battlefield tot the patriot militia who served there (presumable by the state or private donors). Later the U.S. Federal government erected a larger monument on the battlefield, dedicated to those who fell on both sides. Seriously. I cannot imagine the patriots who fell there approving of that. Dameron likewise seemed to morn the loss of loyalist life at the battle.
Overall, this was a decent book, which is why I only gave it four stars. I enjoyed Edgars "Partisan and Redcoats" much more than this book.

The Hell of War

I am so glad I read this book, which I came across while researching another subject. In writing about a single battle -- King's Mountain, October 7, 1780 -- the author depicts much, from the brutality of the civil war to weapons, ammunition-making, foods, farming, and transportation. In calm, measured prose which presents the facts, he shows that the Loyalists, whose stronghold was South Carolina, had used terror against the Patriots, burning their farms and buildings, killing the men, turning the women and children out without food or shelter. When the Patriots won at King's Mountain, they retaliated by hanging Loyalist captives. The war was bloody and brutal: this book shows how and why.
Before reading this book, I knew almost nothing about the "over-the-mountain" men who marched back across the Appalachians, gathering more and more members, and then swung southward in cold and snow, with barely any food, and marched relentlessly until they encountered the British-and-Loyalist troops at King's Mountain, achieving a decisive victory that ended British-and-Loyalist domination in the stronghold of South Carolina. King's Mountain was the beginning of the end for the British and Loyalist forces, and the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Recommended!

Turned off before i opened the cover

As a person that primarily studies loyalists, i found it greatly disturbing that the book uses the term "British" to describe them. All the troops but one at King's Mountain were Americans.
I am immediately turned off by books that lump the Loyalists and British together and use the term American to mean "rebel". This causes the falacy of this not being a civil war to continue and does not put things in the correct light.
Please, please, please, stop writing about them this way.
