A Temperance Book

Hot Corn: Life Scenes in New York (1854) by Solon Robinson first appeared as a serial in the New York Tribune newspaper. Each short story is interconnected and sets forth the backgrounds of the many various characters the author introduces us to.

This is a collection of temperance stories detailing in a rather lurid and sensationalist manner the sins of drinking - particularly rum.

The writing style appears florid and melodramatic to this modern reader, but totally in keeping with the style of the day. The message is hammered home loudly and repeatedly. The villainous characters seem stereotyped, but the object of the writer is to make his point, and in this he is successful.

The desperate poverty and depravity are heartbreaking in this era of no social safety nets. Everyone is excoriated: the wealthy upper classes, saloon keepers, corrupt police, the Church, greedy landlords and businessmen, husbands, wives and mothers.

We see the seamy side of pre Civil War NYC. Every chapter includes examples of the despicable nature of men and women on the downward spiral to the bottom of society through demon drink.

There is a path to redemption once one signs and adheres to the Pledge. The Missionary and those saved from the brink go about doing their good works but are not always successful in saving the children and their dying mothers.

The narrative skipped around a fair bit and it seemed the same story was retold with different characters in each chapter. That, combined with the style of writing began to tire me as the book neared its end.

While I hadn't come looking for a temperance book, it made for interesting reading, something more of a historical curiosity than a totally pleasurable or straightforward reading experience.

NOTE: my Kindle edition did not contain any illustrations, although the text referred to them.

About the Author
Christina Sell is a certified massage therapist, with degrees in Counseling Psychology (B.A.) and Integrative Education (M.A.). She is certified as an Anusara Yoga and an Integrative Breathwork Practitioner. Christina has over 10 years of yoga teaching experience and over 20 years of experience in the fitness and wellness industry. She has been a student of American spiritual master, Lee Lozowick, since 1999, and a student of John Friend, founder of Anusara yoga, since 2000. She currently conducts classes, trainings and workshops in the U.S. and Canada.

Many people come to yoga practice with an ordinary inspiration such as "I want to be more flexible” or "I need to calm down” or even "I want to get fit.” Others come for the more spiritual promises like inner peace, greater compassion and expanding one's consciousness. And while the exterior reasons vary person to person, most of the reasons boil down to, "I have a longing to know myself more fully. I want to experience a greater freedom and live from that knowledge. I think yoga can help me somehow.” In this book I do not concern myself so much with the overt reasons why people are practicing yoga because I see the different motivations as facets of the same diamond; as various manifestations of the longing to align with our intrinsic samkalpa (our intention or aim), to experience a greater freedom and self-knowledge and to act from that understanding. Wanting to do something good for ourselves, like yoga, aligns us with that fundamental part of us that is good and knows that we deserve the goodness of health, clarity, integrity and happiness. Yoga philosophy suggests that the body is a microcosm of greater spiritual forces. Therefore, wanting the health of the body is not divorced from spiritual intention. When we are building a temple of the body we want the structure to be sound, laid out according to a solid plan, and built with the best construction materials and technology available. Physical fitness, therefore, is not a lowly intention. Seen from this wider perspective, freedom for the body is freedom for the heart. Whatever gets (and keeps!) someone on the path of yoga is great because every motive points us back to our heart's intention (to our samkalpa) to experience a higher degree of freedom and self-knowledge. Because we are talking about a temple of the body, even the loftiest of intentions must be brought down to earth and brought to life in the sometimes messy and humbling domain of human experience. One of my counselors in college used to tell me all the time, "You know, Christina, you just can't get through life without getting some of it on you!” Even the most transcendent of aspirations will be made quite real in this endeavor of temple building. Building a temple of the body is as much an intention for practice as it is an outcome of our practice. This intention places our attention and efforts in a stream of ideals that has our highest possibility in mind.

This is a great book. I must say I was hesitant in ordering it as I couldn't see inside the book to see the content and I have a large collection of Yoga books.

However, I am so pleased I bought it. Its a great read. I did my teacher training last year and am teaching this year, this book is a great companion.

I am only up to the Yamas and Niyamas, but so far its a great read.

Christina has obviously put a lot of work into this book. I like the way she frames the book on the building of the Ashram, it invites you to think about things differently.

I also love that her references are usually her own learnings. Some books have a reference list so long that I feel the entire book is a summary of other books.

Wish she lived in Sydney Australia. I would go to her classes for sure. I have ordered her first book, as this one has been so good.

Like subsequent British, Russian, and, now, American and allied armies, the Macedonian wunderking discovered in 329 B.C.E. that invading was easier than conquering. Not persuaded by Alexander's apologists both ancient and modern, Holt narrates the campaign as an unredeeming exercise in pillage and massacre, with the twist that the Bactrians gave as good as they got: Alexander's armies received more damage invading Bactria than in overthrowing the Persian Empire. Alexander attempted to gain the upper hand through policies alternating scorched-earth campaigns with diplomacy, but the Bactrians would renege, revolt, or retreat to the mountains with frustrating regularity. Sound uncannily familiar? Holt's striking parallels between the warlords Alexander pursued and their modern Afghan avatars result in that rarity of history books: one immediately practical to current-day events. Topical and Relevant

I think this book's greatest strength (and weakness) is its constant comparison of Alexander's invasion of Afghanistan and later occupations by the British, the Russians, and the Americans. For today's audience, there are many references to culturally well-known people and events such as when he compares Roxanne, Alexander's Bactrian bride, with Sharbat Gula, an Afghani girl made famous on the cover of National Geographic in one of that magazine's most famous photos and later revisited by the magazine.

The weakness of this lies in the fact that many of the current references will quickly become dated, and future readers won't identify with his comparisons nearly as well.

It was a well-written, fast-paced look at one small part of Alexander's conquests. I'm glad I read it and would recommend it to others. My one hesitation is that he follows a book written in detail on not only the events, but the motives and feelings of the individuals, with an appendix on his sources which states that there is so little factual data remaining about Alexander's reign -- and most of that contradictory -- that it raises the question of how reliable his conclusions are. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book, and will undoubtedly reread it.

A detailed study of Alexander's "Afghan" campaigns

This is a concise yet detailed and easy to read account of Alexander's campaigns in Bactria and Sogdiana (roughly corresponding to today's Afghanistan). The book begins by suggesting that there are lessons to be learned from Alexander's experiences in the region as we negotiate our own involvement in this rough and tumble part of the world. However, not much is overtly made of this beyond the first several pages - the reader is left largely alone to grapple with just how much history "teaches" in this instance. Nevertheless, despite any real overt attempt to link our own plight to that of Alexander's, it is indeed sobering to read of how difficult the king's experiences in the region were - spending some three hard years there after virtually whipping through the rest of the Persian Empire. So much of the Alexander "myth" revolves around these earlier successes, their grand battles, and the brilliant tactics that won the day. This book thus offers a refreshing counter-point of sorts - reminding us not only of the extraordinary price Alexander paid in expanding his empire Eastward, but also, and of more timely relevance, of the extraordinary hardships involved in fighting, and holding onto, that which has been "won" in this part of the world, even some 2300+ years later. A recommended read for anyone interested in Alexander or how the ancient history of the larger "Afghan" region might inform our current experiences there. The only real reason I give this book less than 5 stars is that I would have liked a bit more meta-reflection by the author as a way of concluding the book - it would have been nice to have the author pull things together a bit more and offer his opinions as to what we can learn about Alexander and his legacy through the lens of the "Afghan" campaign. Nevertheless, a book that should be included in any library on Alexander.

A relevant must read

I actually had the pleasure of listening to him talk about this book in one of my classes. He is a great person and an even better historian. This is an unique book that studies Alexander the Great's campaign in the area of present-day Afghanistan and compares it to what Britian and the US later did in that area. Holt explains the various battles and campaigns in that area and how it affected Alexander, his troops, and the world. This is a great book and highly recommend it!

I do not agree with one of the reviewers who believed that it was ridiculous to compare George W. Bush campaign in Iraq/Afghanistan to Alexander the Great's campaigns. It is completely legitimate and that is what history is for! We analyze history that way we can learn from it. From this book it is obvious we as a world have not learned the lessons that Alexander the Great learned and showed us in his campaigns. This is a great book with great, useful comparisons. I do not believe Mr. Holt was overreaching in his analysis.
