In ancient times, it was given to the mistresses of dead tribal leaders so they would enter their master’s grave and be buried alive. More recently, governments have used it to aid interrogations, but hallucinations are among the side-effects, making it ineffective as a truth serum.

The colorless, odorless drug is made from the borrachero tree, which is common around Colombia. Natives grow up with a healthy fear of the devil’s breath and of perpetrators who use its power to rape and rob unknowing victims. When the drug wears off, the user is left confused. Some suffer long-term or permanent brain damage. Many die.

Sexy crime-adventure with a surprise or two

Beautiful, sociopathic femme fatale out for revenge cuts a broad swath of sexual intrigue and criminal mayhem through contemporary Colombian society in this outting from first-time novelist Alicia Torres. Noone escapes the young anti-heroine's seductive wiles or the mind-altering drug she employs to manipulate her many marks, whether it's the naïve American tourist she meets in a bar or the brutal narco-trafficker who destroyed her family years earlier. Sexual sparks and tracer bullets fly thick and fast in "Devil's Breath", with near equally entertaining impact.

This purports to be a true story, though I remain skeptical, especially as a good deal of the plot seems just a tad over the top. The story is not uninteresting overall; the tone and cadence of the narrative do seem authentic (one of my ex-in-laws was Colombian). The sex scenes are sufficiently steamy, if somewhat formulaic and repetitious. The writing is often less than stellar, and the editing is quite poor in places.

Yet, in spite of her many literary shortcomings, Torres does manage to succeed in portraying a character with some depth, more than a few interesting thoughts, and even a smattering of human empathy. Good sex writing not only gets into the characters' beds, but, almost as importantly, into their heads, and the author redeems herself quite well in this regard.

I think the publisher has done Ms. Torres a great disservice in attempting to promote this story as a sensationalistic triple-X romp, when, in fact, it bears more resemblance to a splashy telenovela with strong sexual themes and content. Several early passages are gratuitously "redacted," which seems more a crass, ham-fisted marketing ploy than an attempt to protect the innocent.

Readers in search of steamy, fast-paced entertainment that feels like a low-budget softcore adventure movie may well find much to like in "Devil's Breath".

About the Author
Sheri R. Colberg, PhD, is an exercise physiologist and associate professor of exercise science in the Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education and Recreation Department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Having earned a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, she specializes in research in diabetes and exercise. She continues to conduct extensive clinical research specifically in type 2 diabetes and exercise with funding from the American Diabetes Association. She has also authored close to 50 research and educational articles on exercise and diabetes, as well as two books, The Diabetic Athlete (Human Kinetics, 2001) and Diabetes-Free Kids (Avery, June 2005). She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Breaking the sedentary Inertia

Hi Fellow Readers!

I'm currently reading this book now, but I would like to share some initial thoughts with you.

First of all the fact Dr. Colberg mentions, that you can be overweight and fit. This is very interesting because you set your focus to having a better Blood Glucose control and being healthy not just losing pounds.

I have always been a very sedentary person and the approach she has on step 2 "Get up and Get Moving" and afterwards on Step 3 "Become even more fit" is a natural way to begin and increase your activity levels.

I'm an avid searcher for better ways to take charge of my diabetes, to live a good life, and enjoy the love of my family!!

This book seems to fit me perfectly as a ring, on all the important issues "empowered people" can do to personally collaborate with our Health Team.

Great program for anyone, not just diabetics

I loved this book. Not only does it tell you why you should exercise, but it also gives different programs, tells you what goes on when you exercise, the 2 main types of exercise, and the effects on your body of both types. The author doesn't get carried away with the program--I'm not trying to be a weight lifter, after all, but exercise is greatly beneficial, especially to diabetics. The only thing this book can't do is start you on their program.

This is an excellent book by a true expert. Packed with information on all aspects of exercising to maintain control of diabetes. Like others (Dr. Steven Blair of Cooper Institute in Dallas), Dr. Colberg believes that the key is to get moving and exercising. If the pounds come off or not is a secondary concern. If you have to choose between dieting and exercising, pick the latter every time! Also appreciated that Professor Colberg has written the book in low-cost paperback format.

About the Author
Richard L. Morrill serves on several corporate and not-for-profit boards and as a consultant on governance, leadership, and strategy to colleges and universities. Following ten years as president of the University of Richmond, he became chancellor and was also named Distinguished University Professor of Ethics and Democratic Values in 1998. He previously served as president of Centre College and of Salem College.

Great resource

Although the book seemed a bit dry and academic to read, as I went through the book I had to keep stopping to grab my iPad to check out some of the other books and resources cited in the text. By the time I finished reading the book I had ordered 3 others mentioned in the bibliography. That, I believe, is a testament to the quality of the material.

This is a well written text and relevant to today's challenges and victories in higher education. Very goal specific objectives that deliver each time. Organizational strategy is necessary for proper administration of any organization, specifically higher education. Good organizational leadership is inherent in good higher educational governance. Having both the best strategy and the best leadership at the top and through-out the institution at colleges and universities translates into good governance, good administration, good management principles, and good subordinate compliance.
