Forth Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri Personal Narrative of Charles Larpentuer, 1833 - 1872

This edition by Coues is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to read of the early fur trade through to its ultimate demise by the end of the 1870's. Charles Larpenteur's original diaries are re-written by Coues in a narrative style which makes them somewhat more readable than the original daily notations by Larpenteur himself. At the same time, the editor omits a number of key items and has only an occasional quote that comes directly from the diary. When used in conjunction with the 2007 complete version of the journals as edited in their original wording and form by Michael M. Casler it becomes a very good reference with a readability that is less stilted that Casler's more academically pure version.
I initially used this version of Larpenteur's journal initially to get a solid feel for the lifestyle of the early fur traders on the upper Missouri, and also as my initial one single reference for the life of Richard Clow, the center of my own book, "Rough Enough" until the actual publication of Casler's outstanding piece of research. It's worth the read, but if you are doing solid research and want Larpenteur's actual words, then go for Casler's complete version of the journals.
