Tom Paine, hero of the revolutionary war

The book contains various writings by Tom Paine and a novelized history of Tom Paine's life, mostly centering around his activities during the American Revolutionary War, when he supported by his clear writings and pamphlets, the cause of the revolution. He was viewed by some as a major factor in the survival of George Washington's army, particular during the days when this army almost fell apart, due to victories by the British and lack of equipment and funds to pay the soldiers. Once the war was over, he was given some unimportant posts in the American government, but moved to France to support the French revolution.
One of his own writings, The Age of Reason, was a treatise in support of his belief in God, but opposition to all organized religions as being false and hypocritical.
This led to opposition to his book and to him by many representatives of organized religions and to his denunciation by President Theodore Roosevelt as a "dirty little athiest." Relatively recently, he was finally honored by the U. S. Post Office with a postage stamp.

About the Author
Evie Hunter is actually two authors, Caroline McCall and Eileen Gormley, who met at a creative writing workshop in Dublin in 2010.  Eileen Gormley grew up in the midlands of Ireland. Within a couple of years of leaving college, she started writing articles for local papers and graduated to becoming a full-time freelance journalist for the Irish National newspapers, specializing in court and crime reporting. Her first novel, Don't Feed The Fairies, made it to the quarter-final of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and was published by Ragz Books.  Caroline McCall lives with her partner and several spoilt, ungrateful felines on the windswept east coast of Ireland. Raised on a diet of romance and science fiction, Caroline turned to writing time travel and paranormal romance. A mild mannered paralegal by day, Caroline spends most of her evenings and weekends dreaming up alpha males and feisty heroines.  On discovering that they had a shared passion for erotic fiction, they became the best of friends. In early 2012 they got a chance to co-write a series of erotic novellas for an American publisher. Epilogue to The Pleasures of Winter

If this had been a freebie I'd have rated it 4 stars but I didn't feel it was worth the price I paid so it lost a star for that.

A Touch of Winter is a very short story (around 30 pages) that is basically an epilogue for The Pleasures of Winter. Abbie has a surprise planned for Jack to celebrate their first anniversary but when she arrives at his house earlier than expected she's in for quite a shock when she discovers Jack in his playroom with another woman. Feeling hurt and betrayed Abbie makes a run for it but Jack isn't going to let her go easily and sets out to prove they were meant to be together.

I have to admit that I was irritated by Jack's actions in the story, I think any woman who walked into the same situation that Abbie did would have had a similar reaction to her and I didn't blame her in the slightest for the way she walked out on him. If Jack had come after her and apologised when he explained what she had seen then I would have found it much easier to forgive him but the way he turned it around and put all the blame on her because she ran out on him really annoyed me. Yes, she probably should have stopped and asked him what the hell was going on but if he'd been open about what he was up to right from the beginning then they'd never have found themselves in that situation in the first place. I have to admit that the make up scene was very enjoyable though!

A Touch of Winter is the kind of story that a lot of authors offer as freebies on their website and I have to admit that when I purchased this from Amazon I was expecting more than I got. Yes the story is well written, yes it was good to catch up with Jack and Abbie and yes the sex scene was undoubtedly hot but there were also numerous typos and spelling mistakes that I found irritating in a story that I've paid for. I'm much more forgiving of those kind of mistakes when I'm reading a freebie. In a lot of ways it felt like this was just published as a way of making extra money from fans of The Pleasures of Winter and I don't appreciate feeling like I've wasted my money so that did effect my rating of the story. I do think fans of the series will enjoy the story but I'm not convinced it's worth the price I paid for it.

Here is the complete Capital books plus a biography with photos and lots of other supplemental material. A great bargain for an e-book. The only downside is that on the Kindle app for android a lot of typography and illustration is missing, which makes the book harder to understand.

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers

This is a nice collection of poems about nature and man's place within it. Personally, I didn't truly come to appreciate Wordsworth until I hit my 30s. I read Lyrical Ballads and other poems as an undergrad in college, but at the time, he struck me as a touchy feely tree-hugger. I recall reading lines like, "I wandr'd lonely as a cloud," and thinking to myself how fluffy it all sounded. But the other day, I read the following lines: "The world is too much with us, late and soon, getting and spending, we lay waste our powers." Think about just those two lines for awhile. I sure did. I read this in college and didn't think twice or bat an eye, but I now see this poem, and the larger collection in which it is found, contains profound wisdom about our alienation from nature and the self. If you buy this book, my recommendation is to start with "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey," and read maybe four lines a day, in no particular rush, letting the words and imagery seep in slowly like amber down a tree.

A good collection of Wordsworth's poems.

I chose this title because I like Wordsworth. The price was definitely right, and it is nice to have this available for quick access on my kindle when I am in the mood.
