Evil from the Desert

WOW!! what a great book. Daniel Arenson has got to be one of my favorite authors, his style of story telling is unlike any other. A Day of Dragon Blood picks up a year later after the end of A Dawn of Dragon Fire, this story is dark and kind of twisted, General Mahrdar is seriously a demented character mabey more so than Solina. Elethor is becoming a true King and Mori has grown into a woman. I recommend this book and this series to all fantasy adventure fans, to all fans of Daniel Arenson and to anyone looking for a good book. Enjoy.

Totally hooked from the second I picked the book up.
If you have book one then this is a must buy,it picks up a year after the phoenix war with the vir requim rebuilding their city.
All I can say is you will loose yourself in the story. Buy buy buy!

If only they hadn't gone to war against Tiranor...

A year later....the Vir Requis have lost 20,000 and are down to 30,000 people. Seems like a lot? No, that's just the size of a small city nowadays. They are repairing their city, reinforcing their battlements and armor, and training everyone that is of age and capable of fighting to the cause. Unfortunately, all the seasoned veterans didn't survive, and this means the new soldiers are farmers and kids. There doesn't seem to be much hope.

They all know Solina is coming back with an even bigger army from Tiranor. They have spies on the inside in the hopes of getting a better heads up then they have in the past. The Vir Requis have reached out to all their old allies from Song of Dragons: the Griffins, the Salvanae, the men of Ossana. All of these allies decline; we don't know quite why. Have they forgotten over the centuries the struggle the Vir Requis have had to stay alive? Do they not want to jeopardize the lives of their own race and countrymen? Do they simply not care? They abandon the Vir Requis in an hour of greatest need, trying to convince them that they have enough people to fight this war, and at the same time forgetting that these "warriors of Requiem" are mere children that don't stand a chance.

So the war begins, and it's heart-wrenching. Vir Requis are dying left and right. There's no hope. I thought part way through "why didn't they send all the mothers and children to live with the Salvanae or Ossana to ensure the survival of their race?" It seems like that would have been an easy request to ask their allies. The Vir Requis always find a way though. Even when trapped with no escape, a new solution ensues.

While at first I was wondering "so what artifact will they find to help save the day?" I was very happy to know there was none. Not because I didn't want the day to be saved, but because the story needed to be new and not the same cycle. A battle. To the death. With no chance of survival. I think what makes the Vir Requis such a powerful race is the fact that they never give up even when there's no hope. When things get tough, the tough get tougher.

Now on to book three to know whether the Vir Requis will survive or whether their numbers will diminish again.

I was incredibly pleased to find this book in large print, as it is my favorite of all her works. It is an intense romantic suspense story, and I have looked for it for years. She is such a prolific writer, and has such a large volume of work, that I find it incredible to be unable to find her on Amazon. I really think the publishers are missing a real opportunity by not having this format available for readers.

Can't recommend this book enough. This is old school fantastic story-telling with romance, intrigue, adventure, nail-biting suspense and lyrical writing. Simply the best writing ever. No one writes like Mary Stewart anymore. And this was her first book!! Truly a master.

This is a charming period book...I highly recommend Mary Stewart's early books. When you finally understand why he says, "Madam, will you talk?" , it makes all good sense. This one and My Brother Michael are my two favorites.

A journalist's account - lengthy and accurate

If you expect a breezy page-turner about mob life you will be pleased in parts and disappointed in others. If you want a deeply investigative account of a mafia family, its history and personalities, this book is excellent. I'm not an enthusiast of the mob genre, so I came to this book with little else than what I've seen in the movies. It traces the rise and fall (or at least the beginning of the fall as it was published in 1971) of the traditional Sicilian mafia in America. Against this background are detailed and rich studies of the Bonanno family -- one of the original five New York City mob families. Nevertheless, it's not a Reader's Digest book. It is well researched and detailed, and the author makes frequent tangents. Gay Talese has formidable talents, so I did not mind any of these excesses. If you know what to expect from this book, it is very enjoyable.

This book took a long time to finish. Actually, too long. I agree with those who found it's pace languid, and it's tone solemn. I did find it very interesting what Talese, whose work ethic and commitment to his projects is legendary, writes in the Author's Note that concludes the book, about his relationship with Bill Bonnano, and his subjects. His fondness is very apparent, as well he had incredible access to them, allowing for the intimate information he uses to tell the Bonnano story. But I feel that there is something to his relationship that prevents Honor Thy Father from being more engrossing, more urgent, more energetic. Perhaps the compromises he made to gain access proved an unobjective view. It feels that way. Because the book could have easily been 100 to 150 pages shorter. Extended paragraphs on lawyer's (verbatim) statements, over long observations about Bonnano's feelings while driving cross country, or the myriad interwoven nature of the "mafia" borne out to bewildering and at times confusing degrees.

Not to spoil it, but the ending packs as solid a wallop as only a few sections throughout do. In two pages Talese conveys the bind that Bill was in and expresses what his father Joe's recognition of his son's life means to him. It pinpoints the anxiety and mystery of the whole tale.

I did appreciate the juxtapositioning of Bonnano's family-wife and children-with his "family"-uncles, capos, consiglieri, etc. It proves Talese right that getting to know a mafioso such as Bonnano is both ironic and intruiging because he is a man like us all-stresses with his wife, concerned for his children, wanting to impress his father, weight fluctuations, affairs, but he also has pressures which are specific to his family's history-his sister's awareness of what their father has done to him, codes of honor and silence, absences for unknown and unexplained reasons, constant moving, security, guns, etc.

I like Talese though. I am curious about his other works, and I value the style he helped pioneer. I just wish there was a less expansive scope here. It has an epic length, but it doesn't have vibrant enough sub-plots and twists. It's really about one man's difficult world.

Bill Bonanno: Gay Talese was a very insistent correspondent for The New York Times at the time. The New York Times, he told me, doesn't have reporters, they have correspondents. And he just didn't give up. He was very tenacious. He hounded me for about four or five months until I said OK, you can have the story, provided that we have an understanding: that you will get it a little bit at a time whenever I can. I couldn't very well tell him that at the time I was involved in a shooting war in New York.
One of the stupider criticisms, amidst many legitimate ones, of George W. Bush in this 2000 Presidential campaign is that he is merely following in his Dad's footsteps; as if this was unusual? John McCain went to the Naval Academy--his father and grandfather were admirals. Steve Forbes runs Forbes magazine--here's a shocker for you, he wasn't the founder. Al Gore was nicknamed Prince Albert because he was so patently aping his old man's career. (Bradley is the exception here, thanks to the freak gift of athletic ability). And, your intrepid correspondent, the fifth of six consecutive Orrin Judds, attended the alma mater of three of the four, went to law school like the third and, barring a strict prohibition from my wife, would even now be attending seminary like the first and fourth. This is what men do, we follow in our fathers footsteps. In Honor Thy Father, Gay Talese offers a fascinating real-life account of what happens when the family business turns out to be the Mafia.
Talese was still a beat writer for the New York Times in 1965 when he was sent to the federal courthouse in Manhattan to cover the arrest of Bill Bonanno, an intelligent, affable young mobster who had been wanted for questioning in the disappearance of his father, mob boss Joseph Bonanno. Talese, himself of Italian descent, had long wondered what life was like for real mafiosi. He approached Bill Bonanno, who was his own age and was college educated (though he never finished) and asked him if he would sit down for a series of interviews which would lead to a book on growing up the son of a Don. Over the next five years, while Bonanno dealt with the disappearance and reappearance of his father, fought his way through a mob war (the Banana War) and ended up going to prison for credit card fraud, Talese gained unprecedented access to Bonanno and family and friends. The result is this fascinating novelistic account of life inside the Mob, with a particular focus on how this bright, articulate, modern man was drawn into his father's brutal and backwards business.
It all makes for riveting reading.

The perfect humorous novel.

A Mixture of Frailties tells two complete but entwined
stories: one of Sully and his young wife who
are burdened by the 'dead hand' of Sully's mother
(they must produce a male heir or forfeit a fortune to
'little Miss Nobody, studying Japanese flower-arranging'
under the terms of her malevolent will); another of a
provincial Canadian girl, Monica, who benefits from
the absurd trust established by the will, and makes her
way to Europe to learn if she has any talent as an
opera singer. Monica has talent, though she often
confounds herself in her struggles between filial loyalty
to her coarse parents and her innappropriate love for a
composer of brilliance but no kindness. In the world of
Robertson Davies there are always happy endings. Monica
will find her heart, and her future as a singer; Sully
and his wife will find a fortune and an heir; a multitude
of the sort of people who ought to exist, but somehow
never do, will pop up along the way. But the best thing
of all? Though Robertson Davies died recently, he left
three and two-thirds trilogies which merit reading and
re-reading. The man whom The New York Times called
"The Canadian Trollope" has left a vastly entertaining
and richly humorous collection of novels, essays, and
miscellany.

Davies' humour at its best

The great aspect about Davies' triogies is that each component is a stand alone novel. I read Leaven of Malice and simply enjoyed it! Davies being an editor and publisher, writes with material from experience in the editing buisness. Davies stays true to a Canadian based setting and Canadian characters. He also suggests a dignified proper tone to the book through his diction. It is amusing how these proper characters can act so immature (in their dignified way) and provide so much entertainment to the reader. Davies has the art down of conveying believable characters who do and say outrageous things, and at the same time creates characters that are used in the form of satire. This book is #2 on my list after Fifth Business...this one is a definite read. You will get a lot out of it.

Unraveling Loose Ends

Book 2 of the Salterton Trilogy. Following up on loose ends from Tempest-Tost, and immediately beginning to unravel even more. A rich plot with Dickensian characters and twists (Davies was a great Dickens scholar so no surprise here). A bit deeper than Tempest-Tost, but still obviously an early effort although showing the deft touch with dialogue and character that came to distinguish Davies as a leading novelist.

Initially, it concentrates on the UMNBs of the USA since they have provided a strategic model for other global banking concerns. The UMNBs of Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Canada and Switzerland are then discussed to establish their similarities and differences: case studies are included at the end of each chapter to illustrate and reinforce the points made in the preceding text.

Although written in 1984 the author successfully predicted many of the subsequent developments in the field of information technology and competition in world markets, which led to the emergence of global financial enterprises.
