Follow-up to "More Than Fiends"

The events of this book take place a month after the end of the previous book, 'More than Fiends', when Cassidy Burke discovered that she was a Demon Duster, a kind of Demon Slayer. Her life has become more complicated - although also more fun - now she has a demon lover, Devlin Cole, and Logan, the father of her fifteen year old daughter has also come back into her life.

This story continues Cassie's experiences as a new Demon Duster. However her love life takes an unexpected twist when a Faery turns up at her door, asking for sanctuary. He has escaped from the Demon Queen and only Cassie can keep him safe from the woman who kept him as a love slave. Cassie has rather too much on her plate already, however, what with her other two men, being trained by Jasmine in Demon Dustering and worrying about her daughter's love life. However she finds herself regularly under attack by demons and it takes all her wits - as well as liberal helpings of chocolate and other goodies - to keep her going.

This book is written in a lighthearted style that was mostly charming but also irritating at times (she insisted on referring to a part of her anatomy as her 'Hoo-hah' which got very annoying very quickly). The more interesting parts of the books are her dealings with her daughter Thea and Thea's father Logan, the fights against the demons are all over very quickly. The book focuses more on the witty one-liners and amusing situational humour than any in-depth plot which left it rather unsatisfying overall but it's still an amusing read for a lighthearted moment.

Maureen Child's latest release, A FIEND IN NEED picks up a few weeks after More Than Friends. Cassidy Burke, Demon Duster, has her hands full with a demon lover, a faery needing sanctuary, a law enforcement ex lover, a precocious daughter, and a demon queen who wants her dead.

Cassidy Burke has not been a Demon Duster for very long - a few weeks actually, so she is still learning the ropes of demon hunting and demon demises. When her daughter points out that there is a price on her head for ten thousand dollars dead or alive - but preferably dead - Cassidy knows that every demon in town is going to be looking to off her. Then, to make her day more complete, she opens the door on a handsome and very sexually attractive man demanding sanctuary. Not sure what that is but inadvertently granting it, Cassidy finds out that Brady the faery is the runaway sex slave of Vanessa, the Demon Queen.

In spite of having to protect herself from various demons about town while still trying to have a relationship with her demon lover, Cassidy can't help but be attracted to Brady. Finding out why he is wanted so badly helps some, but Cassidy is still unsure if protecting him is worth the cost. After some home cooked meals and a few sizzling kisses, Cassidy has her answer. To the dismay of her demon lover, her ex lover, and her demonic trainer, Cassidy and Brady explore each other quite naughtily.

Things are coming to a head however in Cassidy's fight against rogue demons. The queen wants her dead and is willing to do anything to accomplish that. Brady has a plan however and is willing to do what it takes to make sure Cassidy comes out the victor.

I quickly found myself smiling while reading A FIEND IN NEED. Cassidy's life is one major crisis after another and frankly, I don't know how she kept from going insane. Training to be the best Demon Duster alive took a lot of management and then, to top it off, Cassidy had to raise a daughter, one who frankly was about as smart as she was. All of this made for a realistic and highly humorous look at Cassidy's life and loves. Maureen Child combined the right amount of sexual tension with humor to hold my attention. Her wit and entertaining banter between characters shined through A FIEND IN NEED and I was hooked. I can't wait to see what she writes next!

It's not easy balancing life being a single parent working mom of a teenager with being a Demon Duster but Cassidy Burke has no choice. Since realizing her generational destiny to be a Demon Duster, she's had to endure countless attempts against her life as well as the exhausting training of Jasmine. To make matters worse, a Faery has claimed Sanctuary with Cassie and now a demon queen is gunning for her. Could things get any worse?

A FIEND IN NEED is just sheer fun. It's the second book featuring the unlikely heroine of Cassidy Burke. While A FIEND IN NEED can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading these in order due to the subplots involving Logan Miller and Devlin Cole. Readers familiar with the first book will be intrigued by some of the twists in this story as it isn't necessarily a romance but is more along the lines of chick lit.

Brady the Faery steals the show in A FIEND IN NEED. As his story unfolds, readers will fall in love with this hero despite the ultimate curveball he throws at Cassidy. Thea's growth as a character has been intriguing to watch as well and I'm wondering if she'll play a more active role as the series progresses. My only disappointment with A FIEND IN NEED is that Cassidy seems stuck in a rut. She seems overly obsessed with sex, to the point it gets almost irritating. I would like to see a bit more depth as she acclimates to her role as a Demon Duster.

A FIEND IN NEED is a quick, often witty read. Maureen Child keeps the storyline upbeat and entertaining for the most part as Cassidy battles demons galore. Fans looking for a humorous twist on the paranormal are likely to enjoy this one.

Sexy and satirical

This is a satire on sex and conventional culture of the 1950s that keeps the reader interested throughout the adventures of Candy, a beautiful young and naive blonde. Candy is struck with the Leftist ideology of giving back something to others, a kind of twisted altruism. What she has to give is herself -- in a physical sense. Her encounters run the weird gamut of hunchback, uncle, fake spiritual guru, etc. She is the typical blonde airhead who realizes that giving herself this way isn't quite what she thought it would be, since she derives considerably more pleasure than she thought from giving. But she is also charming in her naive loss of innocence. "Good grief, it's daddy!; Gosh, what about my period?; Good heavens!" And there are quite a few forbidden words in certain places. It is very funny in places and full of satire throughout. Recommended only for those who have open minds and a sense of humor and satire.

The best book on the market for the CISSP Exam and for any Information Security Professional

If you want to pass the CISSP exam on the first attempt, then make this book your PRIMARY study guide. If you are not planning on taking the CISSP exam, but you work in Information Security, then make this book part of your required reading. It is an invaluable tool to any security practitioner.

Shon Harris has updated both the content and the layout of this newest edition. Key terms are defined in separate attention-grabbing boxes. This is a huge help when you are stuck on a difficult concept that you want to review, such as the concepts that make up "The Common Criteria", or the seemingly infinite terms associated with the Telecommunications and Network Security Domain. If you are a person who uses a highlighter, or if you annotate passages on an e-reader, these attention boxes are fantastic for easily isolating the important details.

The CISSP exam is peppered with many "scenario-based" questions, and Shon has updated her end-of-chapter quizzes to include these types of questions. The quizzes provided on the disc (included with the book) are comprehensive across each domain. The questions offered on the disc will test your true knowledge of the subjects. The Practice Exam book is the perfect companion for the main book, offering detailed explanations of why one answer is "The Best" choice for a particular question.

The folks who compose the questions for the CISSP exam tend to lean towards the "sinister", attempting to trip you up with subtle and sometimes vague wording. Shon writes her questions in a similar style, making you really think about the material to derive the best answer rather than simply memorizing passages from the book. Her questions and the answer choices will get you into the correct mindset to pass the exam. Don't just take her practice exams once and move on - come back and take the same exams again. Even if you start to memorize the answers, Shon's quizzes will help you pick out the important wording of a question so that "sinister and vague" will no longer trip you.

Your studies of the "Common Body of Knowledge" will take you to other sources of information, and while this is encouraged, you will see that none of those sources compare with the directed focus and thought-provoking approach offered in Shon's book. I used 4 different sources for my studies, but Shon's book remained as my "go to" book for clear, concise, and accurate information. Do not be discouraged by the size of the book; when you are taking the test and are presented with a particularly tricky question, you will be thankful for all the detail that is offered in this book. I passed the CISSP using only this book and a TON of preparation

There is no simple formula to prepare for the CISSP certification, and no single resource which can guarantee success on the certification exam since every applicant's background is unique. However, this book (fifth edition) was my only resource in preparing for the exam and I passed on my first attempt (April 24, 2010).

I spent 60+ hours in preparation for the exam... that's 60+ hours of DEDICATED individual study using this book and CD, not 60+ hours spent web surfing during lunch hours or commercial breaks. My recent background is in middle management, with 20 years experience in network architecture and data security, so I already had a firm technical foundation for the test areas dealing with protocols and encryption variations. I also have an MS in Computer Science. Nonetheless, the exam was so broad, with topics covering general principles and concepts, that I could have prepared twice as long and still left the exam with questions about the outcome.

My personal opinion is that formal classroom instruction, through one of the many organizations offering CISSP preparation courses, is a worthwhile companion to Shon Harris' book. A study group is also a good idea. You will not obtain CISSP certification if you take the exam without preparation. This book (fifth edition) was sufficient, but not 100% comprehensive, to prepare me for passing the CISSP test.

Note: Some reviewers do not appreciate Shon's frequent analogies and humor. Most of her analogies helped me internalize the complex topics, but that's my personal learning style. The efforts at humor were generally awful, but every once in a while she was subtle and brilliant enough to make me laugh out loud. Working through Shon's unique writing style was not a problem for me... I actually found it refreshing.

WOW - The Most Comprehensive book available!!!

I've been teaching CISSP for over 10 years (Over 170 times) and I have certified over 1,000 individuals alone. Shon not only presents the topics needed to pass the exam, but she also adds a creative story line which separates her from all other CISSP books. I recommend this book to anyone who needs to look up CISSP topics when studying for the CISSP exam. This book series now in the 6th edition has been used by many as the official courseware for the class. There are several real world scenarios that are discussed and relevant practice test questions. Some choose to read this book cover-to-cover, others research the topics they are less fluent with. In either case, the CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide and the CISSP Practice Exams (2nd Edition) are likely to be the only two books you'll need to compliment your career. Get this book as a self-study tool or as a desk reference for your Security Operations Center (SOC). I've been using this book since the 1st edition and I'm one of the few who have page numbers memorized (as I need/use them in the classroom) and I can say that the 6th edition is the BEST. This is such a great voice!
It describes the perfect *cute* romance between characters that had never had whisp of romance! Second, this author has put such great voice into the book. The book entertains me with its character's personalities. This book also provides lots of strong emotions. :)

This preview of scarlet (cinder is awesome too) is free so why not give it a go?
I would recommend this book to anybody who likes that touch of romance, gallons of humor and handfuls of mystery!

I must get my hands on this book NOW! After finishing Cinder a few days ago, I finally began to read the first five chapters of Scarlet I downloaded several weeks past. As opposed to the start of Cinder, Scarlet hooks you, reels you in, and doesn't let go. I love Scarlet's fiestiness. I cannot wait to finish the book.

I love this series, the concept of the characters, and the pacing of this book. The only complaint I have is that I wish I would have been prepared for all the new characters. I expected this book to pick I where the first left off. It starts ,with an additional story line which was mild.y confusing to me at first.
